Equipment Required for Aromatherapy Candle Making

The first thing you need is good quality wax and the best type of wax for aromatherapy candles is soy or beeswax. Paraffin wax maybe used but it has a higher melting point and does not diffuse the scent as well. Next you will need a melting system and for beginners I would suggest using a double boiler. With a double boiler you have two saucepans, one inside the other. You need to put the wax in the top saucepan and fill the bottom one with a 1/3rd. water. PLEASE, PLEASE keep watch as the wax will catch on fire if the water in the bottom pan boils away. You will also need a candy thermometer for candle making, this is used to check the temperature of the melting wax. You are also going to need to purchase wicks. Now their are a wide variety of wicks available on the market and to start with I would use a braided cotton wick as these have been chemically treated to improve the quality of burning. When making aromatherapy candles you are going to want to also use dye to color your candles as well. You can purchase chips or blocks which you add to the melting wax. When using these dyes, please use a small amount as they go a very long way. Place a small amount in the melting wax and then with a spoon remove a small amount and place it on wax paper, allow to cool. When cool this will be the color of your candle, from their you will be able to see if you need more. You will also need molds which you can find around the house. You may also wish to purchase molds from a craft store. Lastly you need the scent for your candles, I personally like to use essential oils for this. Now this is where your personality will come into play, use whatever you like. Later I will go into essential oils more so that you can make blends to suit any situation. For now that is all that is required to make aromatherapy candles.
